Sewing drawer: Small threads and drawers

How I made happy my smaller threads as well and finished the drawer

In the last article, I modelled a thread organiser for spools with 500m threads, but there was still a lot of space left in the drawer. Also, not all colours are made in a 500m reel. I have a few specific shades available only in a 100m roll, and these spools are a different size, of course. Still, I also tried to make an organiser for them.

I could not use the same concept as that for the spools with a 500m winding because the bobbin spool is larger than the width of the thread with a 100m winding. It just didn't fit. I don't know what cosmic force illuminated me, but I came up with the idea of modelling these small coils in pairs. Thus, the bobbin spools under the thread spools would fit side by side in a zigzag layout.

The side of the sketch was 23 millimetres in height, each of the two spools was a dedicated 44 millimetres in length, and each hemisphere was 16 millimetres in diameter for the spool to fit properly.

I printed one model with eight and one with 10 spools. In total, I have an organiser for 18 spools with a roll of 100 meters.

I didn't model the eight and 10 spools by accident, but I counted very carefully to keep them aligned with the organisers for the large spools.

This is what a drawer filled with all the threads looks like.

But I still wasn't happy. I had an empty space in the back of the drawer, which unfortunately could not be reached by hand. I have to admit that IKEA didn't think of that at all, and it's very limiting. But I thought I would solve the issue of using this space.

I modelled two drawers so deep that they were only slightly taller than the thread organisers. It's a nice idea to put two drawers in there, but how would one pull out that drawer? I really don't know how some things come to me so easily, but I realised that if I made a slight bevel on the front, the drawer could come out and slide down over the spools.

The model of the drawer

The drawers were printed in an hour or so.

It was time to test them. Are they going to slide? Will they fit? Can I pull them out easily?

Yes.

The drawers slide nicely over the spools and are just as easy to pull out. There, I put extra or unknown spools, as well as thread for special materials—no spools I’ll need more than a few times a year.

Done! The whole drawer is well arranged, and everything is easily accessible. I’m happy to sew here.
